Well what a week, we have a roof being made waterproof (finally), experiments with blowtorches, emerging spheres, repurposed window cills, a radically new product line (or so he claims), flying chuck jaws and of course Orchids! Read on for more...
Burnsy has had a visit from Arun the workshop roof is finally waterproof so after a tidy up and a lathe reshuffle work can recommence in the not too distant future. A task also came in from another Monday night member who needed a hand with a laser cutting job. The job was done but we were given a live demonstration of how the task was achieved in Lightburn as part of the session. Lastly, we have a whole load of pitch pine church pews for sale...any interest just get in touch.
Daniel Stewart has been out in the workshop experimenting with fire!! We got a look at a couple of pieces which had been given the blowtorch treatment followed up with some wire brushing....and very nice they are too. Well done!
Gary Lowe sent over some photos of a piece he has completed recently, an emerging sphere complete with colour and texture. Gary said he had some issues with keeping things accurate when making the piece...looks like he managed it in the end though !!
John Brown sent over some photos of a couple of pieces. First one is a lidded bowl made from some recycled Parana Pine window cills being skipped by a neighbour renovating their house. Second is a gnarly lump of Laburnum which John is trying to get into shape whilst retaining as much of the grain pattern as possible without it disintegrating totally...quite a challenge! Mike Wilson went over to the Irish Guild symposium/seminar and sent in this photo of a demo piece by Phil Irons....apparently it's a new product line he's come up with - Pinhole cameras (I usually go with Telescope, Kaleidoscope or put two together and go with egg timer). Just goes to show there's no such thing as a mistake, just an intense moment of opportunity......
Patrick Lindsay sent over some photos of a couple of recent pieces, Patrick is going through a natural edge phase and it seems to be working out well with some really lovely pieces being produced. We also got some photos of Orchids in bloom...really splendid stuff!!
Phil Irons was one of the demonstrators at the Irish Guild Symposium/Seminar and sent in some photos of the main club/chapter competition pieces which were based on the theme of lathes. All you can really say is WOW! Some absolutely stunning work from the Irish chapters. We also heard about the "pinhole camera" and a small incident involving the chuck jaws Phil uses to make his spoons...apparently a piece of them was launched into the audience....makes the demo far more interactive apparently.
